Blending Beauty & Function in E. Setauket, New York

Bakes & Kropp was engaged for the design of a 658-square-foot kitchen and accompanying butler’s pantry in a newly-built home in Setauket, New York. Our challenge was to transform the vast area into an elegant and digestible space and to blend beauty with functionality. Led by Senior Designer Mary Dimichino, our team tackled this directive by dividing the room into distinct areas for cleaning, prepping, cooking, and entertaining. Accented with unique design elements including decorative hutch cabinet grilles and a built-in coffee maker, the resulting space is a transitional, fully-customized kitchen for the serious home chef.

Secrets of Luxury Cabinetry: Wood Countertops

Let’s start with the basics: location. The best wood countertops are used sparingly and in strategic spaces—dining, preparation, or display areas. We generally do not recommend using wood countertops around the sink—not because you can’t—but because it won’t provide as satisfying an experience. The two best places to implement a wood countertop are in an island seating area, where the wood will create a warm surface for dining, and in a preparation station. A station built for chopping and preparing food is dedicated for heavy use.

Sometimes the metal is there as a guardian, protecting the top edge of drawer fronts or exposed corners and sometimes it is simply a beautiful accent in the form of dramatic inlays or beautiful medallions, yet, there are even times when you cannot see it at all supporting truly remarkable structures.
